When I told the story,
The bear sat up a little straighter and the lamb sang
The cold flat night started to boil over
I shivered and saw all the hairs stand up like moss on a stone
The gradual pulling away lead to dematerialization
Carefully constructed wooden objects , colored dark and rectangular
With early slats like an expensive suit
We stood among them but were not invited in
I could have let go of her hand and watched her slip between
The melancholy sibilance of its seething indignation
We tarried, in our sneakers and our thin cotton tank tops
Partly mirrored, partly wary
