The nurse spoke with a heavy New York accent,
Though she said she had not been here long
She inserted and reinserted and reinserted the needle
Functionlessness and endlessness, the abandoned highway,
Unfinished and preceding
Struck by lightning, unearthing the first utterance
Indeterminate colors in encaustic , devoid of gesture,
Embedded lines opening
Implements, hung and wrapped, saturated
She gathered up the belongings as if she were competent,
And took charge of a situation that would never come to pass
