Within a rectangular arena,
A mixed group of men and women,
Chopping and sautéing
Carrots in compact stacks,
Shear articles of cabbage, wedges of kale.
Tiers of cooked vegetables,
Served to the cheering crowd, on cardboard flats
A rotating schedule appears and sets
Exchanges of working, and eating, and celebrating
On either side of the horizon the sun bares
A series of columns flanking the perimeter,
Cut metal with coin-colored squares
In the interior, waist high, where men place
Their hands to extinguish the heat
Sleep is not fitful, burdens are light
